UTV (Side by Side) info

44 YEARS OF SERVICE TO NORTHERN OCONTO COUNTY 1968-2012

Where can I ride my UTV and other frequently asked questions

Are all side by sides trail legal? No...UTV's must have a roll bar, seat belts and a "box" along with other restrictions to be trail legal. For more information visit a DNR office, call 1-888-936-7463 or use the web at http://dnr.wi.gov/contact

Does my UTV have to be registered? Yes, for this year the fee is the same as a ATV but that may change in the future. Check with your dealer and the DNR to make sure that a particular UTV is on the list of models that can be registered and ridden legally.

Can I ride where ever it is legal to ride a ATV? No!!! In our 5 county area of the state (Oconto, Marinette, Langlade, Forest and Florence) most public trails and routes are UTV legal unless marked otherwise. The big exception is on Forest Service land. Here the 50 inch rule applies so only the standard width Polaris Razer is currently legal. There are a few exceptions so check local conditions. In the Townsend area Wildwood Trail is open to all UTV's making for some nice riding loops on the east side of the Nicolet Trail.

What is my best source for up to date UTV information? Our State ATV/UTV organization is constantly on top of changes for UTVs. Check with WATVA at www.watva.org or go directly to thier UTV webpages at http://www.wiutv.org/

UTV PILOT PROGRAM
In our area Oconto, Forest, Langlade, Marinette and Florence county are all partcipating in the pilot. Using the Nicolet State Recreational trail as a backbone it is possible to ride from all of these counties to the others and on into the UP. Come visit us...it's a great place to ride!!!

The DNR is conducting a two season Pilot Program to test the feasability of allowing UTV'S  (Side by Sides) to ride on the same trails as ATV's. This program is on a county by county basis. If a County opts in all town authorized routes open to ATV's will also be open to UTV"S unless a township opts out of the pilot.  The United States Forest Service has a 50" max width rule so only the Polaris Razar will be legal on Forest Service trails and routes. A 65 inch rule is in effect for all other routes and trails. More information about the program is listed below in a DNR handout. Click on the image to enlarge for better viewing.
